What a Helper CTO is

It is not a job opening. It is an arrangement about who carries responsibility.

Most small and mid-sized companies cannot justify a full-time CTO: one month of that salary can cost more than a full year of system maintenance. The system still needs someone who sees the whole picture, can make technical calls on your behalf, and can be reached when something breaks.

A Helper CTO puts that role outside the company. We are a professional system developer with 5+ years behind us. We have written our own systems and taken over other people's — which is how we know a system survives not because it got written, but because someone stayed responsible for it.

You do not need to read the code first, and you do not need to write documentation first. You need to know three things: who owns the system, what happens next, and what it costs per month.

The four things we take responsibility for

From the day we take it over, until the system grows with the company.

01

Takeover

We start with a system health check — mapping the code, database, deployment environment and known issues — then decide how to take it over safely. A vendor that stopped maintaining it, a developer who left, an agency that went quiet: those are our usual starting points.

02

Maintenance

Hosting and monitoring, bug fixes, security updates, backup verification. Someone looks after it day to day, and when something breaks you know who to call and how fast you will hear back.

03

Improvement

We fix what breaks first: no backups, no monitoring, no tests, hard-coded credentials. Technical debt does not have to be repaid all at once, but you should know what is owed and which part to settle first.

04

Continued development

Companies grow and systems have to follow. New features are scheduled by business priority, handled by the same team throughout — so you never have to explain your business from scratch again.

When a Helper CTO makes sense

  • The only engineer who understood the system has left, and the handover was a list of passwords.
  • The system was outsourced, and the vendor no longer maintains it — or cannot be reached.
  • AI or vibe coding produced something demo-ready fast, but nobody dares put it live and nobody can fix it.
  • The company is not big enough for an in-house team, but several systems are already running and nobody can judge what to do when they fail.

If you nodded at any of those, that is exactly why this role exists.

What we are not

Not staffing

We sell judgment and responsibility, not hours. Headcount without judgment is work we turn down.

Not a project that ends at delivery

We bill monthly and you can stop whenever you want — but while we work together, the system has an owner.

Not a consulting report

The health check gives you a one-page assessment, but the point comes after it: we take over, maintain and improve the system ourselves rather than handing you advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Helper CTO different from outsourcing development?
Outsourcing delivers a project and responsibility ends at handover. A Helper CTO carries responsibility long term: once the system is with us, maintenance, improvement and further development stay with the same team, and someone picks up the phone when it breaks.
What does it cost per month?
Long-term maintenance plans start at NT$6,000/month, adjusted for system scale and scope. Development work is quoted separately. You get an exact number once the scope is confirmed — never a rough estimate.
Do we have to do the health check first?
We recommend it. The check is a 60-minute online session plus a one-page assessment, priced by system scale, and it answers whether the system can and should be taken over. Quoting without one would be irresponsible on both sides.
We already have engineers — do we still need this?
Usually yes, in this shape: your engineers focus on the core business, while maintenance, monitoring, security updates and technical judgment for everything else sit with us. That way one person is not carrying every system alone.
